Drinking Water Supply for 1,200,000+ people.

9000+ hectares of Melbourne's Water Supply heavily sprayed with a range of pesticides. Most spraying occurs within 20km of Sugarloaf Reservoir.

June 17 2012: Pesticide Found Near Drinking Water Dam

What are the Chemical Loads? Why did Melbourne Water only test for two currently used pesticides (2,4-D and Atrazine (up until 2008))?

In mid 2008 Melbourne Water expanded its testing in reservoirs and drinking supply. The additional compounds now tested for are; Hexazinone, MCPA, Triclopyr, Asulam, Glyphosate, Captan, Carbaryl, Chlorpyrifos, Esfenvalerate, Maldison, Mancozeb, Parathion Methyl, Propargite, Simazine, Picloram, Cyprodinil, Metham, Methyl Bromide, Pyrimethanil, 1,3 dichloropropene, Iprodione, Methomyl, Bromoxynil, Metiram, Chlorothanlonil, Chloropicrin. This is in addition to the pesticides already tested for Aldrin, Dieldrin, Chlordane, DDT, Heptachlor, Heptachlor epoxide, Lindane, 2,4-D and Atrazine.

Pesticide Monitoring post August 2010:

In 2008, Friends of the Earth determined that the main pesticides of concern to Melbournians could probably be; Parathion Methyl, Paraquat, Diquat, Simazine, Chlorpyrifos, Carbaryl, Methomyl.

Also a worry to people and health of Yarra River and tributaries would probably be; Mancozeb*, Paraquat, Diquat, Maldison*, Thiram*, Metiram, Pirimicarb, Triclopyr, Methomyl, Ipriodione, Dimethoate, Captan, Endosulfan, Abamectin*, Propargite*, Azinphos Methyl & Esfenvalerate.

Melbourne Water has risen to the challenge and only five pesticides (marked with *) remain untested by August 2010. On top of this Melbourne Water has also significantly increased testing for pharmaceuticals and antibiotics.

What about the hundreds of other pesticides used upstream of the offtake to Sugarloaf Reservoir?
