Henley Golf Course Updates November 2004

Yarra Running at Highest Levels since development begins

November 9 Updates

(Yarra River at Yering Gorge peaked at 2.7m (late afternoon Nov 9)) Peaked at 2.91m (early morning Nov 16)

November 14 Updates

November 8 Updates

November 5

November 5 2004: New works on the floodplain include clearing in very close proximity to horseshoe billabong which is of State and National zoological and botanical significance. Also note shed placed on floodplain. One hopes that chemicals are not stored here. Has the horseshoe billabong surrounds been sprayed? What happens in a flood event? This is supposed to be an exclusion zone. Where are the sediment traps? Where is Nillumbik Shire who are supposed to monitor this site? This also constitutes breaches to the Development Plan in that all works on Stage 1 have to be completed and stabilised before any works occur on Stage 2.

November 5 2004: 12th hole blow-out. Recent spring rains have inundated the Yarra Valley. This photo reveals inadequate drainage at road crossing at southern end of 12th hole. This gully runs along 13th hole. This reveals totally inappropriate drainage is the order of the day, with drainage infrastructure unable to cope with spring rains. This has led to scouring occurring of newly laid 'tee', with much sediment and fertilisers? washed into Lake A. Drainage such as this does not leave one with much enthusiasm for other areas of the course which may be inundated with flood water from the Yarra.

November 5 2004: Silt traps having no effect as they have been washed over by spring rain draining from wetland, near southern end of 13th hole and on the north side of the 12th hole.

November 5 2004: Botched up drainage line crossing near 12th hole.

November 5 2004: Henley Flood plain. Recent rain has stopped most excavation works.

November 5 2004

November 5 2004: Note large soil stockpiles stored on floodplain.

November 5 2004: View looking south onto St.John's Course. How much fertiliser and herbicide is washed off fairways and greens during flood events? How much is washed into the Yarra River?

November 5 2004: Flooding gully near 12th & 13th hole. High erosion potential at this site. Poor engineering standards unable to cope with Spring Rain.

November 5 2004: Is this sustainable?

November 2004: Roading erosion leading to high sediment levels entering Lake A

November 5 2004

November 5 2004: View of minor flooding of gully. Note wetland which was unable to handle large volumes of water during recent rains.

November 5 2004: A very full looking dam at the top of 13th hole and gully. This dam has overflowed causing erosion problems for 12th and 13th holes.

November 5 2004: View of eastern side of the golf course fiasco - looking south. Note build up of water in natural billabongs and depressions. Water on top left is flood water stopped by levee. The newly approved turf grass nursery is to be located just behind this water in a highly floodprone location. Several golf holes are also planned on this flooded area.

November 5 2004: Engorged natural billabongs and flood water starting to bank up behind levees on eastern side of the golf course.

November 8 2004

November 8: 12th hole gully wash up (see also below). Note scouring of road and gully and evidence of sand erosion and movement.

November 8 2004: Flood plain primed for flooding. Yarra River running in places only a few centimetres from flooding.

November 8: Yarra River almost spilling over floodplain.

November 8: Engorged billabongs

November 8: Works starting prematurely on Stage 2. Scalping of land very close to billabong of state and national significance. Where is the erosion control in the high chance of flood event occurring? Have these areas been sprayed?

November 8 After spring rainfall. Future lakes becoming engorged.

November 8 2004: 13th hole washouts. Sand slumps and sand movement off fairway.

November 8 Eastern Boundary. Engorged natural billabongs and flooding of future playing surfaces.

November 8: Poor erosion compliance for possible runoff from 16th hole.

November 8. Obvious drainage problems with 16th hole. Slumping and movement of sand off future fairway. Gullying of centre of fairway also apparent.

November 8: Gullying out and high erosion of 16th hole. Note sand dislodgement.

November 8: Yarra almost in flood on Henley flood plain. Just centimetres from going over.

November 8 2004: Bridge crossing to Henley flood plain.

November 8: Back-up of water from Yarra River on north side of river.

November 8: Submerged silt traps

November 9 Updates

(Yarra River at Yering Gorge peaked at 2.7m (Nov 9))

Nov 9: View looking across floodplain from north.

Nov 9: Obvious erosion and drainage problems occurring on 16th fairway.

Nov 9: Obvious erosion and drainage problems occurring on 16th fairway.

Nov 9: Obvious erosion and drainage problems occurring on 16th fairway.

Nov 9: Obvious erosion and drainage problems occurring on 16th fairway. Will the Lakes be drained so that excavation works will proceed? If so where will the turbid drained water go? Photo taken from western side of the course.

Nov 9: View of eastern part of floodplain with Yarra River levels recorded at 2.7 m at Yering Gorge. Note flooding of floodplain at top of screen. Imagine the river at 3.5m.

Nov 9: View of eastern part of floodplain with Yarra River levels recorded at 2.7 m at Yering Gorge.

Nov 9: 16th fairway

Nov 9: Slight erosion occurring off course road near 16th hole.

Gully at edge of 16th hole obviously flooded after recent rains. Much of this water came from gully on farmland to the east of the golf course.
