*Information based on Freedom of Information requests with various water authorities (2006-7). Based on percentage breakdown in relation to ADWG guideline limits. Other incidents likely to have occurred, but not recorded due either to water authorities not testing for that particular pesticide or FoI records not taking into account information held by regional water boards. Hence this information supplies only a fraction of the potential incidents.

a - These are generally based on the analytical limit of determination (the level at which the pesticide can be relianbly detected using practicable, readily available and validated analytical methods). If a pesticide is detected at or above this value the source should be identified and action taken to prevent further contamination

b - Based on 10% of acceptable daily intake (ADI).

c - These pesticides have either been detected on occasions in Australian drinking water or their likely use would indicate that they may be occasionally be detected.

Note: Routine monitoring for pesticides is not required unless potential exists for contamination of water supplies.

Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in Water & Sediments from the Ovens and King Rivers, North East Victoria, Australia

F. McKenzie-Smith, D. Tiller, D. Allen EPA Victoria, State Chemistry Laboratory

Published in Arch. Environ Contam. Toxicol. 26, 483-490 (1994)

p485 "Residues of dieldrin and total DDT (DDT and its metabolites DDE and DDD) were detected in sediment samples at all sites...No other organochlorines were detected." "Dieldrin was found at levels considerably lower than TDDT but in the same order of magnitude"

Site 1: Just down from junction of Buckland and Ovens Rivers - downstream of Porepunkah. Sediments: Site one had the lowest mean concentration of TDDT (6.3 ng/g). The maximum dieldrin concentration (42 ng/g) was measured at site 1 (mean 6 ng/g)

Site 2: Ovens River upstream of Myrtleford. Sediments: "Site two had the highest mean concentration of TDDT (31.9 ng/g)" Sites 2 and 4 averaged 5ng/g dieldrin. Seastar Samples: Site two had the highest concentrations of TDDT (maximum 1.4ng/L, mean 1.27ng/L) measured in a sample from an area of slow current flow. The highest dieldrin concentrations were also measured at site 2 (maximum 1.21ng/l in the fast current area, mean 0.98ng/L). Storm event: There were detectable levels of TDDT and dieldrin residues in all water samples collected from both sites during the storm event. At site 2, between 6 and 16h, the mean concentration of TDDT was 5.0 ng/L. An anomalous high concentration (342 ng/L TDDT) was detected at 8hr. Notably this was the only water sample which contained metabolic residues of DDT.Dieldrin was detected only once at site 2 at 10h.

Site two: Concentrations of DDD, DDE, DDT, total DDT, and dieldrin residues (ng/L) in water and Seastar samples during flow event.

Site 3: Downstream of Myrtleford & Buffalo River on Ovens River. Sediments: The mean concentration of TDDT residues at site three was 24 ng/g. Sites 3 and 5 averaged 3 ng/g dieldrin. Seastar samples: Sites three and four had mean TDDT concentrations of 0.95ng/L and 0.73ng/L respectively. Sites 3 and 4 had similar dieldrin concentrations with means of 0.77ng/l and 0.60ng/l. respectively. Storm event: There were detectable levels of TDDT and dieldrin residues in all water samples collected from both sites during the storm event. The maximum residue concentration measured at site 3 was 16ng/l of DDT in one sample at 6h. The mean concentration of TDDT residues (8.6 ng/l) detected in the first 16h of the storm event at site 3, was higher than in the latter 16h (6.0ng/L). At site 3, dieldrin was detected in each sample in the first 12h of sampling.

p22 "The total DDT residue concentrations of 3800 ng l-1 measured at the Ovens River research station, was above the threshold values of the EPA criteria and World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines for safe drinking water and was well above the criterion for ecosystem protection. This level of total DDT was as high as the maximum concentrations measured in other intensively sprayed agricultural catchments (Fitzpatrick and Sutherland 1983, Fitzpatrick et al in prep, Thoma 1988).

Dieldrin was detected in samples from both the Ovens and King Rivers. The concentrations at Edi approached and on one occasion exceeded the values for WHO safe drinking water guidelines.."

Results

p9 "Samples of surface water collected in February following heavy rainfall were very turbid.

Pesticide residues were detected in samples from four areas" Rosebud, Koo-wee-rup, Orbost and Bairnsdale. No pesticides were detected in samples from the Thorpdale area. With the exception of bromacil, all pesticides were detected. The concentrations of pesticides measured were generally below the ANZECC or USEPA environmental guidelines for fresh waters.

Most detections were in surface water samples although pesticides were detected in groundwater from the Rosebud and Orbost districts. Metribuzin and linuron were detected in groundwater from Rosebud (site 3) while atrazine was detected in groundwater from Orbost (site 17). The concentrations of the pesticides detected in these groundwater samples were below the ANZECC and USEPA environmental guidelines.

In surface water samples, the concentrations of pesticides exceeded guidelines at Orbost (site 16) and Bairnsdale (site 21). Atrazine exceeded USEPA guidelines at both sites when samples were collected after heavy rainfall. Chlorpyrifos exceeded the ANZECC guidelines at site 21 when sampled at the end of the summer spraying season in March.

Endosulfan also exceeded the ANZECC guidelines at site 21. The total endosulfan concentration (a, b and SO4) exceeded guidelines after heavy rainfall in February and in March. In February, the endosulfan detected was entirely in the sulfate form. In March, the both isomers and the sulfate form were detected.

The Orbost and Bairnsdale samples were also screened for organochlorines other than endosulfan. Dieldrin was detected in the Snowy River downstream from the horticultural area. Both dieldrin and DDT were detected in the Mitchell River upstream from the horticultural area. All detections of dieldrin and DDT exceeded the ANZECC guidelines for freshwater."
