How many and what type of hormones has this cow just dumped into this domestic water supply in the Acheron River?

Otway Ranges: 2,4-D was detected in Gellibrand's water supply in early 2007. It had to been washed off farmland in Lardners Creek catchment.

Mildura in the State's north west. Atrazine was detected by Lower Murray Water in Mildura and Red Cliffs water supply in May 2006 at 0.03ppb (this was the first year that Lower Murray Water tested for Atrazine and they only test for it once a year). Drinking water for Mildura is supplied from the Murray River. Note intensive horticulture (inlcuding viticulture) upstream of Mildura. Atrazine was also detected in the Murray River 200km upstream at Piangil. What impact is atrazine having on the freshwater ecology of the Murray River?

Maffra & Stratford Gippsland

Looking upstream into the Macalister River water supply, showing the town of Maffra in the Gippsland region of Victoria. Drinking water for Maffra & Stratford (~6,000 people) is sourced from the Macalister River. Upstream of the offtake - between Maffra and Lake Glenmaggie is approximately 20,000 hectares of land, of which 5,000 hectares is forested. A large proportion of the remaining 15,000ha is used for irrigated agriculture. (The Macalister Irrigation District actually totals 54,700ha most of which lies outside the domestic water supply for Maffra and Stratford).

It is highly likely that agricultural run-off including a swathe of pesticides, fertilisers and cattle hormones can be washed into the Macalister River and streams that feed into the Macalister, particularly in times of rainfall.

As of mid 2006 Gippsland Water, the water authority responsible for providing drinking water to the residents of Maffra and Stratford, was not testing water for pesticides (or hormones), claiming that such testing was almost impossible because users of pesticides are under no obligation to tell water authorities what pesticides they are using, therefore water authorities do not know which pesticides to test for!

Most of the irrigation in the district is used for perennial pasture for dairying with an average annual irrigation amount of 5ML/ha. The Macalister is the second largest dairying region in Victoria. It could be suggested that Gippsland Water should have a look at other irrigation regions in Victoria and work out a sampling regime. Such a regime for starters would probably have to include the herbicides; Glyphosate, Paraquat, Diquat, Amitrole, Ammonium Fluphosinate, MCPA, Pendimethalin, Trifluralin, 2,4-D, Diuron, Metribuzin, Simazine, Bromoxynil, Atrazine and insecticides Dimethoate, Omethoate, Chlorpyrifos & Alpha-Cypermethrin.

These fine suspended mineral solids are transported within and sometimes away from irrigated fields. Some fines are redeposited on the soil surface during infiltration, forming surface seals that impair infiltration.
